The health care needs of residents of Portage la Prairie and the surrounding area are well met by the community’s hospital, two long-term care facilities and a variety of community health care services.

The Portage District General Hospital serves an area of population of over 50,000 people and includes an 89-bed acute care regional centre. Care services offered include: critical care (ER/ICU), surgery, obstetrics, medicine, extended treatment, chemotherapy, hemo dialysis, community mental health, rehabilitation, respiratory, as well as a variety of diagnostic and ambulatory care services. With support from many community partners, a full range of community services (mental health, public health, home care) are available to the residents of Portage la Prairie and extended communities.

The Portage Clinic is located near to the hospital and offers a range of outpatient services to clients by appointment.

For long-term care, residents may choose between two accredited facilities: the Lions Prairie Manor and the Douglas Campbell Lodge. The former offers 136 personal care beds, while the latter offers provides 60 personal care beds. Both facilities are professionally managed and staffed and offer a wide variety of programs for seniors.

Portage la Prairie is a thriving community home to over 13,000 citizens. The community offers a high quality of life to its residents, and a sense of friendly country hospitality in an area that also provides the amenities of an urban centre. The fertile local soil surrounding Portage la Prairie supports local agricultural activity, including the production of some of the best potatoes in North America and an extensive horticulture industry. Throughout the year, the city’s beautiful Island Park - surrounded by Crescent Lake - provides ample opportunity for outdoor fun and recreation, including 18-hole golf, tennis courts, playground areas, picnic sites, a hedge maze, a self-guided arboretum, a scenic duck pond adn the exciting “Splash Island” pool, complete with giant waterslides. The Portage Spillway and Reservoir is an ideal spot to take part in summer activites such as fishing, boating and swimming, while the Republic of Manitoba Park houses 11 soccer fields, 9 baseball diamonds, 2 beach volleyball courts, a batting cage, and a football/rugby field for sports enthusiasts.
